Much of the technological breakthroughs on appliances followed after the invention of the light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879. A couple of years later, the brand Singer introduced the home electric sewing machine. This was followed by the lightweight electric iron as well as the “Thor,” the first electric-powered washing machine in 1901.
The first moveable vacuum cleaner was invented in 1905 but it didn’t perform well because it weighed 45 kilos. Three years later, the first electric coffee percolators appeared. In 1910, the electric stove, in-home electric refrigerator, and radios with tuners entered the market.
The residential refrigerator and dishwasher next appeared in 1913, followed by the automatic pop-up toaster in 1919 and the residential air conditioner in 1928. Without the invention of this air cooling system, many of today’s medications may not have existed since they require a cool environment for storage.

It’s easy to run out of fridge space these days. Many households have two fridges (plus a chest freezer). We have a full-sized kitchen a mid-sized (like college dorm fridge) in the basement plus a small chest freezer and beverage fridge.
Obviously, a refrigerator is a necessary appliance. If you don’t own a refrigerator, then you have to shop daily.
The big issue is choosing a fridge because it’s a costly purchase. The variety of options, styles, and layouts is considerable. In other words, there are many types of refrigerators you can buy.
Your first consideration is how wide and tall your fridge should be which is likely dictated by the space you have for your fridge. Most kitchens wedge fridges between cabinetry so you’re stuck with whatever space you have.
Fortunately, there are fridges of all widths so something will fit. You want it to fit to minimize gaps but not so tight you need to pound it in with a sledgehammer (or chisel away cabinetry). Measure carefully haha.
In fact, I also have a full-size fridge in my office.
Our home fridge is a single-door style. My office is a double door style.
Surprisingly, I much prefer a single-door style fridge. I find with double door fridges I’m constantly opening one door and then the other. It’s not as convenient. That’s my two cents’ worth. While the double “french door” style fridge seems like a better option now having one I prefer the single-door.

Freezers typically go hand-in-hand with refrigerators. A lot of refrigerators will come with a freezer included as part of the unit. Not all refrigerators will have a freezer attached to them, though. Sometimes, people will need to go out and buy a standalone freezer that they can make use of in their home.
Even if you do have a small freezer that is part of your refrigerator, it may be beneficial to consider buying a standalone freezer. Having a large chest-style freezer can actually be very convenient. It will allow you to store larger amounts of food at once. This can help you to make fewer trips to the grocery store, and you will be able to keep more food in stock.
Large families will be especially keen on owning one of these freezers. It is going to make it so that you can feed the whole family a lot more easily. You’ll be able to store more of your staple foods such as various meats, frozen vegetables, and other essentials. As long as you have room for a large freezer, it should work out very well for you.
We just replaced our oven.
It was a bit of a drag because when the former oven broke down, it was hard to determine whether it could be fixed. Ultimately it couldn’t (after a hefty repair effort bill) so we bought a new one. Good ovens aren’t cheap but it’s an appliance we’ll have for quite some time so it was worth investing in a good one.
As you know, an oven is definitely a home appliance that you won’t want to be without. Living with a hot-plate or toaster oven can work, but it’s not ideal. As an aside, our oven was broken over Thanksgiving so we cooked the turkey on the grill which worked amazingly well. So it is possible to get by without an oven, but it isn’t very convenient. You need an oven to be able to bake most of your favorite foods. A high-quality oven can really help to make your overall home life that much better.
If you are the type of person who enjoys cooking, then you will definitely want to purchase an oven that will meet your standards. Sometimes people who are really into the culinary arts will want a large oven that will help them to cook multiple things. There are plenty of amazing ovens out there for you to consider, so you will be able to purchase one that will be great for cooking large meals. Finding an oven that works well in a smaller kitchen shouldn’t be too tough, either.
Finally, if you do host big dinners, consider two wall ovens. We also have a microwave/convection oven which saved our bacon for Thanksgiving. When both convection and the main oven work, we can crank out a lot of food for great dinners.

Heck, just the fact it’s on a counter is convenient.
Fortunately, toaster ovens are pretty cheap. You can find decent ones around $40 but of course, you can spend more for more bells and whistles.
I’ll say this and that is much preferred heating up and cooking food in a toaster oven than a microwave. I know microwaves are popular but I really prefer food out of conventional heat.
The toaster isn’t necessarily an essential home appliance to own, but it can be really convenient. If you are the type of person who loves to have breakfast in the morning, then you will certainly want to own a toaster. This is going to allow you to toast your bread quickly and you can truly complete your breakfast. Some people also like to make foods such as English muffins or certain toaster pastries in the morning.
You will be happy to know that toasters are actually very affordable too. You won’t have to pay too much money at all to get a really nice toaster. Often with babies, you need to wash bottles, soothers, etc. but you don’t have enough for a full built-in load so you could instead just load up your countertop compact dishwasher with your baby stuff and get it clean ready for the next round of baby care.

People who live in houses will generally want to own a nice washing machine that can handle a heavy workload. There are so many different types of coffee makers. In fact, they can be split up into many different categories which include single-serve, drip, percolator, and espresso machines plus many more types of coffee makers.
I’m currently partial to single-serve coffee makers like the one featured above. We have one at home and in my office. This way coffee is fresh and we make only the amount we will actually drink. You also get your cup faster in the morning instead of waiting for a full pot.
However, purists scoff at single serve which I can understand if you’re really into coffee. IN that case, increase your budget and get a high-quality drip brewer or a full-fledged espresso system. I’m not such a coffee aficionado so single serve does the job for me.
If you own a home that has carpeted floors, then you had better own a vacuum cleaner. It is not going to be practical to clean your floors without a vacuum cleaner if you have carpeting. Thankfully, vacuum cleaners aren’t necessarily expensive. You will be able to find plenty of vacuum cleaners on the market that is reasonably priced.
It is also possible to find vacuum cleaners that are a bit on the fancier side. Some vacuum cleaners can be fairly pricey, but they may also provide you with many interesting features. Certain vacuum cleaners will be very powerful and may be capable of providing a deeper clean than some of the more affordable models. It is up to you to decide which type of vacuum cleaner you should pursue.

I love the food processor. It saves so much time and tedious chopping work.
If you prepare food at home, a food processor is a must-have small appliance.
I used to think it was a waste not to mention a waste of space storing small appliances is a problem unto itself) until we borrowed a food processor from a friend for a dinner party. Wow! It was awesome. We diced and chopped so much fresh food so quickly that the next day we ordered one up and haven’t looked back.
While we don’t use it every day, we use it often and when we use it, we love it.

Anyone who bakes needs a stand mixer.
The one featured above is super popular. It’s not the cheapest. It’s a mid-priced option that has rave reviews.
While the stand variety (versus just a mixer) costs more, it will save your arm and hand. It will also allow to get onto other steps in your recipe while something mixes. Standing there holding a heavy hand-held mixer is really touch on arms and hands. I’m a big guy and fairly strong but I tire quickly. Not to mention it’s really boring.
If you bake, get a stand mixer. Period.

I used to be into juicing big time. That was before kids when I had the time. I’d juice huge batches containing all kinds of fruits and vegetables.

There’s more than one way to make popcorn at home. If you have kids, a popcorn maker can be a very good investment – at least in our house where our kids, especially our youngest, love the stuff (not a bad snack to like).

You have to love sandwiches to buy, let alone use a panini maker.
I love a good sandwich but I’m content with toast or plain bread.
But I totally get the appeal of panini maker – grilled cheese, elaborate hot sandwiches – whatever you think will taste good cooked between a couple of slabs of bread.
