Name: Adrianne Hawthorne , Seth Thomas , and four cats Location: Roscoe Village, Chicago Size: 1013 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting
This gorgeous Chicago home isn’t the first time we’ve gotten to see a peek at Adrianne Hawthorne’s colorful, maximalist decor style. We toured her 400-square-foot San Francisco studio apartment a few years ago, where she didn’t let the small size get in the way of adding patterns and playfulness. When she moved to Chicago a few years later, she sent us images of another studio apartment , also 400 square feet, also gorgeous. The home she now lives in, which she shares with her partner Seth Thomas, is a little larger than the two last studios she’s called home, but it’s as colorful, patterned, and maximalist as ever. (Though it started out as a pretty bland, cold modern canvas, as these before photos show .) It’s a beautiful backdrop for Adrianne’s creative work under the name Ponnopozz , which includes wildly colorful paintings, fabric, and more.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style : Colorful, wild, maximalist.
Inspiration : Adrianne – Color! Seth – My lovely partner Adrianne.
Favorite Element : Adrianne – The walls that we painted. The patio. The floor-to-ceiling windows. Seth – Orange sherbert paint job under the counter.
Biggest Challenge : Adrianne – The building is new and ultra-modern, with grayish floors, white walls, and concrete accents. While I appreciate the modern touches, I didn’t like how cold it felt when we first moved in. My goal was to add warmth and life to the space through color, pattern, texture, and maximalism. Also, this is Seth and myself’s first apartment together. It was a challenge to merge his stuff with mine, but I think we’ve made it work. Seth – Staying calm while fulfilling some wild concepts from Adrianne.
What Friends Say : Both: Friends usually need time to take it all in. First, they breeze right in and exclaim how cool everything looks in the living room. After a few minutes, though, many of our friends ask for time to look at everything in detail. Several have spent lots of time in our entryway, looking at the wall and asking questions. One commented that it was “like a museum” in here. We feel the place is a true reflection of our personalities so we’re delighted when friends want to spend time looking around!
Biggest Embarrassment : Adrianne – All of the cat paraphernalia. We have four cats so it’s inevitable but still—things like the giant cat scratcher are bulky elements that need to be out for the cats to use and they don’t always match with the rest of the aesthetic. Seth – Litter boxes.
Proudest DIY: Adrianne – The pattern detail on the pink living room wall and the green guest bathroom wall. I did the pattern free-hand, with only a vision in my head. That’s a little scary but once I started, I saw that it was turning out pretty good so I just kept going. Seth – Since we live within visibility of a CTA train stop, I wrote a custom CTA train tracker. I used CTA’s open API, fetching data every 10 seconds for the most up-to-date train times. It has been super useful for us!
Biggest Indulgence: Both: The massive, seven-foot tall Restoration Hardware mirror in the dining area. We got it secondhand from Seth’s cousin so it was far less money than it retails for. Seth and our friend Sam carried it up four flights of stairs by themselves since it wouldn’t fit in our building’s elevator!
Best Advice: Adrianne – Forget about making everything in your home match perfectly. I used to worry about that but I freed myself from that notion with this apartment. I love bright colors and while things in here don’t match “perfectly,” they harmonize in some way. Seth – If your partner has a vision, trust it and try and enable it. You’ll probably like how it turns out, even if you don’t see the vision right away.
